A Story in One Painting
Heather Fulton is an accomplished studio artist. Her work has been displayed in galleries throughout Western Massachusetts, including Northampton, where she is an important part of the burgeoning art community. After receiving her B.F.A from The Rhode Island School of Design, where she majored in Children's book illustration, she decided to push the conventions of illustrative storytelling by working in a larger format. In the fourteen years since, she has developed a unique form of collage painting which includes personal notes, tickets, letters and receipts combined with tissue paper, foil, or antiquated music scores. Her works are large, tactile and manage to convey a depth and atmosphere without the use of perspective. Heather's paintings make complex, yet accessible statements about childhood, the power of symbols, the fine edge between humor and fear, and the difficulty of settling upon any single interpretation of a work of art. The works maintain the spirit of illustration by telling stories, often aided by provocative poetic titles, which guide the viewer without compromising the mystery of the process. Each work is unique: No prints or reproductions exist. Heather is available for Private commissions. Patrons may provide personal momentos/ephemera for incorporation. When not painting, Heather teaches art to children, whom she cites as her inspiration and credits with being her best critics.
